Fairfax, Herndon and Reston, VA

My office was in Herndon, VA. A place very close to dulles airport, which is like 1/2 an hour drive from Washington DC (I <3 DC). I stayed at Homewood Suites by Hilton (Yes, Paris Hilton is the heiress of the chain, and No, she was not my personal housekeeper, which was so bad). More on Homewood Suites later.

Ok, so the Office and Hotel are very close, like 2 mins walk. There is a place called Clock Tower, about a mile away. It has Shoppers, CVS, SubWay, McD, Thai, Japanese, Chinese, Vietnamese restaurants and 3 indian restaurants. So if you are staying anywhere near that area dont pack ur bags with even a single food item, u'll unnecessarily increasae the weight. (Instead pack some extra underwears, atleast it will save u laudry trouble for few additional days).

The area (Herndon and Reston) falls under Fairfax county. The local public transport for Fairfax is Fairfax connector (http://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/connector/), mostly the north route. The nearest bus stop for Fairfax Connector is at Clock Tower. From Clock Tower a bus (950) goes to Herndon-Monroe park and ride and from there you can go to West Falls Church metro station. Metro is the most efficient, easiest and cheapest way to travel in DC. More on Fairfax Connector and Metro later.

The Reston Town Center, which has shops, restaurants a movie theatre and a seasonal skating rink is within 5 miles from Homewood Suites (and the hotel has a shuttle service for a 5 mile radius). Reston town center is a nice place for roaming around, usually crowded on weekends.

There is a complex called Worldgate, very close to the hotel, which has restaurants and a movie theatre. Kohls, Target, Bloom, Giant are also within the shuttle radius.

But the best place for shopping is undoubtedly Fair Oaks mall. Its little far but i liked the place most. Some good quality shopping. I personally didnt like Target and Wallmart, they are very similar to Big Bazaar here, cheap bulk stores. A bus goes to Fair Oaks mall from Reston Town center.

Thats all for tonight on this amateurs guide to US of A.............

Prologue...

Most of you who follow my other blog, are already aware of encounters with US embassy and my journey of lifetime to Mumbai, after which I finally got my US visa.

So, as the fate intended, i was finally set to fly on Jan 9th, supposedly to be in US for 3 months for an onsite assignment. As i was going there for the first time, the shopping list was longet than a toilet paper roll.
It was winter time there so jackets, gloves, scraf, thermals were must have. I was not sure about the food options there so i had an entire bag full of instant food, maggie, soups, rice, spices and what not. It was like i was going on a world tour, 2 checkin bags 50+ lbs each, a cabin bag and a laptop bag.
(Now, if you are carrying a laptop bag, carry the classic styled laptop bag, dont carry a haversack for laptop, Air France screwed me for 200$, cos they wont allow a cabin bag and a laptop haversack in flight, well and to be honest, combined it weighed around 50 lbs).

Anywez, more on travel tips later, lets start with some sightseeing tips...
